有机合成材料是用有机高分子化合物制成的材料，主要是通过化学合成将小分子有机物如烯烃等合成大分子聚合物。

有机合成材料不是纯净物，而是混合物，主要原因是有机物在发生聚合反应时，一些分子链较长的分子往往会被拉断，从而形成结构相似、分子量却不同的分子，这样的若干分子聚合在一起，即使是同种类型结构，化学、物理性质相似，也不能叫做纯净物。举个简单的例子，在烷烃这种简单有机物中，分子量越大，越不容易达到“纯净”的水平，液化乙烷中难免不混有丁烷、戊烷、庚烷等同类有机物。
